OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego City School District Board of Education is pleased to announce that Dr. Dean Goewey, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, will take the position of superintendent left vacant upon Ben Halsey’s recent resignation.
After careful consideration and a thorough interview process with Dr. Goewey, the board determined that Dr. Goewey’s appointment will best serve the interest of the district, while maintaining a continuity of leadership.
Dr. Goewey is a long-standing member of the district’s administrative team and has performed admirably in his role as assistant superintendent, according to the board president.
He was a finalist for the position of superintendent when Halsey was selected and has been the acting superintendent during much of the Halsey tenure.
Dr. Goewey came to the Oswego City School District in 1991 after seven years as a first grade teacher in a neighboring Oswego County school district.
After serving as a literacy specialist at Kingsford Park School for 10 years, he served as an elementary principal in Oswego schools for 13 years before being appointed assistant superintendent in 2014.
He has a doctorate in Executive Leadership and has spent his career advocating for others.
“Dr. Goewey brings over 30 years of experience as a teacher, principal, and district leader. This coupled with his advanced degree in leadership and his love of our community and district makes him the perfect fit for Oswego,” Board President Kathleen Allen said today (Nov. 10).
Dr. Goewey, who is currently performing the duties of the superintendent, will be appointed to the position at the November 17 meeting of the board of education.
“I look forward to continuing to support the district’s mission, through shared vision and an educational philosophy we can all embrace. I am honored and excited to serve the district that I grew up in as the superintendent of schools,” Dr. Goewey said.
The district, like many others in New York State, is facing challenges on multiple levels, but Dr. Goewey is confident that the staff, students, parents and community will unite and work collaboratively to strengthen its position.
The district anticipates a smooth transition in the leadership through Dr. Goewey’s appointment.
