MINETTO/VOLNEY – Earth Day and Canal Clean Sweep was a busy weekend around the Minetto and Volney areas.

There was the Minetto Clean Sweep on Saturday.

Volunteers cleaned up and prepped the RiverView Park.

Other volunteers picked up litter on Route 48, alongside the Oswego River and Barge Canal.

On Sunday, the event took place at Great Bear Springs Recreation Area, adjacent to Route 57 and bordering the Oswego River, including the old tow path and Whiskey Island, located in Volney.

Members from Exelon’s, NAYGN (North American Young Generation in Nuclear) organization volunteered with several members of Friends of Great Bear to cut and clear brush at the historic Spring House, that is adjacent to the Oswego River and historic canal tow path on Sunday.

Built in 1912, the Spring House supplied water for Great Bear Spring.

For years the Spring House supplied water to be bottled and sold nationally.

Through family, local business and private, donations, the renovation of the Spring House will begin this season.

Other members of Friends of Great Bear put up new trail markers on the tow path and reset a boardwalk bridge on the tow path, that had shifted due to flooding.

“We also had a roadside litter pick up on Route 57, by Cayuga Community College this morning, starting at the Great Bear entrance,” Dick Drosse, one of the volunteers, told Oswego County Today on Monday.

Monday’s litter pickup met at the entrance area to Great Bear and did litter pickups along Route 57 and adjacent roads.

Students from instructor Jean Siracusa’s Environmental Studies class volunteered doing a roadside litter pickup on Route 57 by Great Bear Springs Recreation Area.

With the plastic water bottles now having a deposit on them, there seems to be a change over with the fruit and power drink containers be more prevalent.

Fast food cups and containers hold their own as roadside litter.
