OSWEGO, NY – At its meeting this week, the Physical Services Committee paved the way for some downtown music.
  ÂÂÂ
Council President Dan Donovan requested use of public property on behalf of Marilyn Boyzuick.
The event chair of the downtown business merchants wants permission to use Civic Plaza during Harborfest for a two-piece band.
The hours would be from 3 to 7 p.m. on July 25 and from noon to 4 p.m. on July 26.
She also requested use of power and permission to erect a 10-foot by 10-foot tent.
They hope to bring more visitors to the downtown area as they travel to various Harborfest events, she explained.
“We got a little group of merchants together downtown who think it’d be nice to have a little event going on to attract more people to the area,” Boyzuick told the committee. “It would be during business hours, before the evening’s festivities. We’d like to see more people spend time downtown during Harborfest.”
For safety reasons, Police Chief Mike Dehm suggested West Oneida Street be closed to traffic between West First and Second streets.
This isn’t a unique event, Gail Goebricher of the chamber pointed out.
“We have had a couple musicians down there is the past, the Noun Family Singers, and others. They were across the street in the plaza part. So they won’t be in anybody’s way,” she said. “It won’t be crowds, it’s just going to be occasional people stopping to listen to the music.”
Mayor Randy Bateman noted the councilors will have to check to make sure the area isn’t one of the locations the city already designated for use by Harborfest.
The committee voted to send the request to the full council for consideration.
