OSWEGO – Recently, Mayor Billy Barlow had the opportunity to meet with Oswego Firefighter Derrick Backus and his canine fire investigation partner, Kyrie.

Both Firefighter Backus and Kyrie are specially trained in accelerant
detection, a critical component of fire investigations.
Mayor Barlow was able to see Kyrie in action during the visit at City Hall, as several samples of accelerants were hidden in the council chambers.
Using several voice commands from Firefighter Backus, Kyrie sniffed
out and located the accelerants.
The samples were actually Popsicle sticks with a small amount of kerosene.
Firefighter Backus and Kyrie are used throughout the area, made possible by a joint effort between the city of Oswego and the county of Oswego.
“I want to again extend our thanks to Oswego County Fire Coordinator Don Forbes for his work on this project, as well as Firefighter Backus for his countless hours of training and preparation,” Fire Chief Jeff McCrobie said. “Kyrie is a great asset to have in our corner.”
