OSWEGO – The sixth item on Wednesday’s agenda was a budget amendment of $500,000 for road salt for this and next winter. The Department of Public Works commissioner, Craig Rebeor, spoke at tonight’s meeting. DPW stores between 7,000 and 8,000 tons of salt.
This is amid a reported salt shortage in New York due to the state’s move away from importing salt. “We are not running out of salt, but we are out of money,” said Rebeor. This half a million will assure we have enough to get through the rest of the season and restock for the beginning of next winter, to have a full dome going into ‘26.”
Police Chief Phillip Cady requested $22,065.48 for camera upgrades. The council approved 2 different grants for cameras for a total of $128,000 last year. “Once we got through all the pricing and where the cameras need to go, there is about this $22,000 difference,” said Cady.
