High-Speed Chase Through Downtown Oswego Ends in Arrest, No Injuries Reported

OSWEGO – On April 9th at approximately 2:09 am, Oswego Police Officers observed the operator of a tan 1997 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck operating recklessly and passing a red light, westbound on W. Bridge St. at W. Second St. Oswego Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop of the vehicle and the driver, who was later identified as Andrew P. Jones (37 years old), last known to be a resident of Auburn NY.  Jones refused to stop for law enforcement and began driving in an increasingly hazardous manner, driving in opposing lanes of travel, passing other traffic, failing to stop for red lights at an unsafe speed.

Jones made multiple passes through the Oswego City Downtown corridor which was heavily populated with pedestrians.  Due to the increasing level of reckless behavior, the pursuit of the vehicle was terminated, officers shifted the priority of their response to keeping pedestrians safely out of the roadway and attempting to stop Jones through the deployment of stop sticks.  While police were attempting to keep pedestrians safe, Jones began doing “burnouts” in multiple intersections.  At that time, additional law enforcement agencies coordinated and responded to assist, including the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department, who were able to re-initiate the pursuit.  At one point Jones drove his vehicle directly towards an Oswego County Deputy Sheriff’s Sergeant who was out of his vehicle attempting to deploy stop sticks.

At approximately 2:52 am, Jones pulled his truck into the parking lot of Byrne Dairy, where his vehicle was immediately surrounded by law enforcement.  Jones surrendered without further incident.  No injuries have been reported as a result of this incident. Jones is currently in police custody pending an arraignment in Oswego County CAP Court and his vehicle has been impounded.

Jones has been charged with the following:

The Oswego City Police Department would like to thank the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Police, Oswego County District Attorney’s office and SUNY Oswego Police Department for their assistance and coordinated efforts which led to the safe resolution of this dangerous incident.
