Jury Convicts Cicero Man Of Assault

OSWEGO – At approximately 5:30 p.m. today (Oct. 5), an Oswego County jury convicted 32-year-old Chad R. Burman of Cicero, NY, of the felony offense of Assault in the Second Degree.

The prosecution alleged that Burman assaulted and physically injured a 69-year-old man on June 3, 2016, in the parking lot of the Waterfront Tavern, a restaurant located along the Oneida River in Hastings.

The Hon. Spencer Ludington presided over the jury trial, which started on Monday, October 2.

The jury heard from 10 witnesses over the course of the trial, including Burman, who claimed that he was acting in self-defense.

The jury deliberated for 4 1/2 hours before convicting Burman of the violent felony offense, which was the sole count in the indictment.

District Attorney Gregory Oakes tried the case on behalf of the Oswego County District Attorney’s Office.

Syracuse attorney Edward Menkin represented Burman.

After the trial, District Attorney Oakes said, “I want thank the jurors for their service and appreciate how closely they paid attention to the evidence.”

Oakes also thanked the community members who came forward and testified at the trial, adding, “The civilian witnesses played a key role in helping us obtain justice for the victim, as they provided important pieces to complete the puzzle.”

According to the District Attorney’s Office, both the New York State Police and the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Waterfront Tavern the night of the offense.

District Attorney Oakes thanked all the officers who worked on the case but gave special praise to NYSP Inv. Charlotte Yerdon, who headed the investigation.

“Investigator Yerdon worked diligently to find witnesses, and today’s conviction would not have been possible without her dedication,” Oakes said.

Burman is scheduled to be sentenced in Oswego County Court on December 14.
