OSWEGO – The City of Oswego is excited to announce they have been awarded $57,565.00 by the New York State Archives Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund.

The Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund (LGRMIF) is a fund dedicated to improving records management and archival administration in New York’s local governments. The funding is made available through the New York State Archives as part of the Office of Cultural Education, an office of the New York State Education Department.

The funding will be used to assist the City Clerk’s Office with the digitalization of its Vital Records. These records include Birth, Death and Marriage Records, which are required to be kept on file in perpetuity. These files have been consistently used since the late 19th century to assist individuals with their identification needs and important life events and goals.

“With the help of this grant from the New York State Department of Education, we can preserve our aging books and usher them into a new era” said City Clerk, Mark Tesoriero. “These records, which have been used repeatedly for more than a century, have reached a deteriorated state that could result in a catastrophic loss to the community if they were to be destroyed. However, thanks to this grant and the dedicated team undertaking the monumental task of digitization, we can preserve this critical genealogical information for generations to come.”

The city has contracted the Syracuse-based document technical firm Katapult Solutions, LLC, to digitalize the Clerk’s Office’s vital records. Once completed, the books will be moved into long-term cold storage with the intention of permanent and safe retention.

“This grant represents more than just funding—it’s a commitment to preserving Oswego’s legacy. Our vital records tell the story of generations, and thanks to the support from the New York State Archives, we can ensure that story remains accessible, secure, and intact for years to come, said Mayor Rob Corradino. I commend City Clerk Mark Tesoriero and his team for their dedication to safeguarding these irreplaceable documents and embracing innovation in service to our residents.”
