Local Heroes Spreading Warmth

OSWEGO, NY – Recently, some sharp-eyed walkers have spotted mittens, scarves and other cold weather apparel seemingly growing out of trees.

It’s the second year of Gloves with Love, a program by the Oswego Federal Credit Union and Oswego County Opportunities.

The program collected new hats, mittens, gloves and scarves for children. Slightly used or new adult hats and winter scarves were also be collected.

They’ve been placed on trees in various parks in Oswego, Fulton and Mexico.

“It looked as if the trees were growing mittens,” one walker exclaimed.

Random Acts of Warmth and Kindness

Members of the Oswego Fiber Arts Studio Group have also made plans to share a little warmth and kindness throughout our community.

“We’ll be placing dozens of pieces spread out across the parks,” Patti Beaumont, a spokesperson for the group, told Oswego County Today. “It’s our Random Acts of Warmth and Kindness project.”

This is the group’s first attempt at such an event; so they’re starting small “to make sure that things go smoothly,” she added.

Beaumont is delighted that others have taken up the challenge of helping the needy stay warm.

“The more, the merrier. I love that they put items out as well,” she said. “It sounds like this would be a natural partnership for next year!”

Her group plans to disseminate what they have made on Jan. 28.

“We’ve got about 50 handmade pieces so far. We’ll put things in Oswego’s Breitbeck Park, Washington Square Park, Franklin Park and along two trails at Great Bear (Recreation Area in Fulton).  For fun, we decided to add in some crocheted toys in addition to the clothing,” Beaumont said.

The Fiber Arts Studio Group made cowls, mittens, hats, ear warmers and scarves.

They’ll attach them to trees and benches.

The items will be placed in plastic bags, decorated with bows, and include a card from the maker to “The Lucky Finder,” Beaumont explained.

The card directs the person to “please enjoy the item or to pass it along to someone they know who would enjoy it or needs it,” she added.

Any unclaimed item(s) will be removed by the group at the end of the week.

The Oswego Fiber Arts Studio Group meets Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. at the McCrobie Center in Oswego.
