Mayor Gillen Announces Appointment of New Oswego City Historian

Mayor Thomas W. Gillen on Tuesday announced that he has chosen Mark J. Slosek as Oswego’s new City Historian.

Mr. Slosek is a retired school administrator and former American history teacher, whose career in public education spanned thirty-nine years of service with the Fulton School District.

He received his B. A. in History and Education from Niagara University, an M.A. in History, and a C.A.S. in School Administration from S.U.N.Y. Oswego.

He is a past curator of the Oswego County Historical Society and was an active member of the Oswego Immigration Council.

He authored “Polish Immigration in Oswego” which appeared in the Oswego County Historical Yearbook.

Mr. Slosek’s contributions as an educator and administrative leader include: Student Senate Advisor, Yorker’s Club Advisor, Revolutionary War Bi-Centennial Committee membership, charter member of the Oswego State Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, also serving as President and Vice-President of that organization, Fulton Teachers’ Association past Vice-President, Fulton School Administrators’ Association past President, charter membership in the New York State Middle School Association, the New York State Network of Middle Level Liaisons and the Oswego County Middle School Principals Association.

He is the son of Anthony Slosek, author and former historian of both the city and the county.  He is the caretaker of the Anthony Slosek/Leo Finn Collection of Oswego History materials.

He and his wife, Patricia, are the proud parents of four adult children and three grandsons.

“I am thrilled that Mr. Slosek has accepted my offer to be Oswego City Historian,” Mayor Gillen said. “After talking with him, I feel he has the necessary experience and background to do an excellent job as City Historian.”
