Multiple Residents Displaced After Apartment Fire in the City of Oswego

OSWEGO – An early morning fire in the City of Oswego resulted in 9 residents being displaced from their home. Firefighters were dispatched at 1:11am to a report of a fire at 179 E. 7th St. with multiple people still inside. While enroute to the incident Firefighters were updated that everyone was out of the building. Firefighters arrived within a few minutes and confirmed a large 2 family home that was well involved in fire.

Firefighters quickly deployed multiple handlines to extinguish the fire and conducted an immediate search of the building for any possible victims. Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire and confirm that all residents were out of the building. Firefighters remained on scene for roughly 4 hours extinguishing hot spots and conducting extensive overhaul operations. Fire damage was contained to the apartment of origin, with the adjacent apartment sustaining moderate smoke and water damage. The City of Oswego Fire Investigation Team is still on the scene at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Several agencies assisted the Oswego Fire Department on the scene including Oswego Police Department, Oswego DPW, Fulton Fire Department, Novelis Emergency Services, Minetto Fire Department, Scriba Fire Department, Oswego County Fire Coordinators Office, Menter Ambulance, and National Grid. Firefighters from Oswego Town responded to the City of Oswego to cover any subsequent calls for service. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

City of Oswego Assistant Fire Chief Michael Zalewski commended those working on the scene for their efforts, saying “Our Firefighters did a tremendous job in quickly getting this fire under control and conducting a rapid search of the building to ensure no people were still inside. Special thanks to our assisting City Departments and to our great mutual aid partners that assisted on the scene and stood by to cover other calls in the City during the fire”.
