OSWEGO COUNTY – Anglers fishing the 2018 NYS Winter Classic Fishing Tournament can visit three local businesses — All Seasons Sports and Salmon River Sports Shop in Pulaski, and App’s Bait and Tackle in Cleveland — to register and weigh in their catches.
Several of the top pickerel, northern pike, steelhead and walleye caught in last year’s tournament were entered at Oswego County weigh-in stations.
Now in its fourth season, the tournament is expected to draw more than 1,000 anglers in competition through the end of February.
The statewide event includes all waterways of NY State (ice, open water, rivers and streams, ponds, and tributaries), allows anglers to use any legal angling methods (fishing from a boat or from shore is fair game), and includes seven main categories of fish plus an overall award for the largest burbot caught this year.
The event incorporates more than 60 weigh-in locations, most of which also take registrations.
“This year’s prize pool is now over $60,000 in sponsored cash and prizes, not including the general cash payout and lunker pool,” said tournament director Tim Thomas. “Last year’s grand prize winner Tyler Seamon, who took first place in the northern pike division, walked away with more than $3,000 in cash and prizes.”
Thomas said some of the highlights of this year’s event include:
– Shanties or other high-end items at every weigh-in location as a local raffle. Anglers can gain entrees simply by registering at a shop, stopping in, and/or acquiring additional entrees through in-store promotions. General rule: one entry per person per location per day plus any additional promotional entrees.
– Grand prize award prize pool includes a cash award (based on number of anglers in the event, minimum $500), Aqua-Vu HD 10i Pro underwater camera system, and a fish mount from Hirsch Taxidermy. The drawings will take place at the dinner awards ceremony. The first drawing will be from the seven first place anglers (winner will choose the award they want), the second drawing will be from the seven second place anglers, and the third drawing from the seven third place anglers.
– There are several additional prizes including a Humminbird Ice Helix-7 G2 plus a Lake Master Card for the overall largest fish weighed-in each month; a Humminbird Ice-55 Flasher for the overall largest panfish weighed-in.Aqua-Vu Revolution 5.0 underwater camera system for the largest fish weighed-in by a female angler; $1500 Steve Neilsen artistic steelhead piece for the overall largest steelhead weighed-in.
General registration for the event is $25, and $35 if entering the optional lunker pool (pays out the top three lunker pool anglers in each category).
The main event will pay out up to 25 places per category based on angler participation.
Anglers can register online at (www.NYSwinterclassic.com) and at most weigh-in locations.
