Oswego Common Council Proclaims National Fire Prevention Week, New Fire Truck Purchase

OSWEGO – Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow declared Oct. 9-15 as National Fire Prevention Week during last night’s Common Council meeting, Monday Oct. 11. 

Reading a proclamation in observance of Fire Prevention Week, Barlow outlined a series of fire-related statistics from 2021; urging people to be aware of certain fire hazards within their homes, while encouraging people to mark out pre-planned exits in case of fire.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fire departments responded to 1.35 million fires in 2021, with U.S. home fires resulting in 38,000 civilian deaths last year. 

“Oswego, NY is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting the City of Oswego,” Barlow said. “I urge all the people of the City of Oswego to develop a home fire escape plan, and with all members of their household practice it twice a year. And to participate in the many public safety activities and efforts the City of Oswego Fire and Emergency Services [hold] during Fire Prevention Week.” 

Also passed during last night’s meeting was a Bond Issuance in the amount of $1,025,000.00 for the purchase of a new fire fighting vehicle for the Oswego Fire Department. 

During the September 19 Committee meeting, Oswego Fire Chief Randy Griffin spoke about the 1986 Heavy Rescue Vehicle the fire department has, stating problems the 36-year-old vehicle suffers from to the point of no longer passing inspection.

“Unfortunately, the inspection of this vehicle didn’t last, and we found cracks in the frame – so between the frame and the box, the box began to separate,” Griffin said. “That vehicle is currently and has been out of service for some time.” 

Griffin said they found a demonstrator model that is new with minimal mileage; stating due to COVID supply chain issues and time delays, this would be the best fit for the needs of the department and city. Cost of the Heavy Rescue Vehicle comes in at $1,025,000.00

The Bond Resolution for purchase of the Heavy Rescue Firefighting Vehicle was unanimously passed by the Council.

All resolutions voted on by the Council were unanimously passed; the following a list of items on last night’s agenda:

• Approve September 26, 2022 Common Council meeting
• Appoint Commissioner of Deeds 
• Approve Use of Public Space – Jeanne Ritz, in order to host the RitzKids Crush Cancer 5K on Saturday, October 22, 2022
• Approve Extinguishment of a Paper Alley located behind 253 East Sixth St.
• Authorize Mayor to enter into an agreement with C&S Companies for Professional Services for the Route 48 Corridor Beautification and Safety Improvement Project and further authorize the City Chamberlain to complete a Budget Amendment for the same
• Authorize City Chamberlain to complete a Transfer of Funds within the Police Department in the amount of $15,000.00 for the purchase of a Drug Task Force Vehicle
• Authorize City Chamberlain to complete a Budget Amendment to the Tourism Contracted Services Account in the amount of $4,050.00 for the Lighthouse Tours
• Authorize City Chamberlain to Complete a Budget Amendment to the Water Fund for the purchase of Water Meters
• Waive Rules of Common Council to present Resolution No. 313 from the floor without  Committee consideration
• Accept donation and Use of Grant Money received from the Shineman Foundation to Kristin Shanley for Two (2) New Blackboards for the Shapiro Park Basketball Courts, replacement of the Little Lending Book Library, and new flowers to be planted
