OSWEGO –  The City of Oswego is excited to announce that $700,000 in funds has been awarded through Restore New York, Round 9, for the Freight House restoration project.

Restore New York Communities Initiative supports municipal revitalization efforts with funds to help remove and reduce blight, reinvigorate communities and generate new residential and economic opportunities statewide. The program is designed to help local governments encourage new commercial investments through community revitalization, growing local housing, and putting properties back on the tax rolls to increase the local tax base.

The City of Oswego was approached by the developer back in the fall of 2024 about the Freight House project, asking for their support. The city was happy to provide support for it by submitting the grant application. The city is extremely excited to see the restoration of the historic Freight House building on the horizon, the only remaining structure of the once prominent railway system through the city’s downtown. It is important to note that the City of Oswego has no financial investment in this project. Funds are awarded to the developer, not the supporting municipality.

“The City of Oswego is deeply grateful to Governor Hochul and the Restore New York program for this significant investment in our community. The $700,000 award for the Oswego Freight House redevelopment on West Utica Street is a transformative step in preserving our city’s rich history while driving economic growth.” said Mayor Robert A. Corradino. “By restoring and breathing new life into this 175-year-old structure, we are not only honoring our past but also building a stronger, more dynamic future for Oswego. This investment will complement our ongoing Downtown Revitalization Initiative and underscores the power of collaboration and strategic revitalization, ensuring that our city continues to thrive for generations to come.”

The Oswego Freight House redevelopment will transform the historic 7,200-square-foot rail freight house at 20-24 West Utica Street into a 10-brewer barrel brewery, taproom, and retail space. The project will preserve the building’s 175-year-old character while addressing years of structural decay and blight. Located near the City’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative projects, this redevelopment will leverage completed and ongoing investments to further revitalize the Utica Street corridor.

Over $50 million was awarded state-wide. Check out the full article to see what other communities were awarded and how they are utilizing the funds in their area. https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-more-50-million-awarded-through-restore-new-york-communities
