OSWEGO – During Mayor Corradino’s mayor report, the mayor announced that the independence parade here in Oswego will be on July 7th, starting at 1 PM. Directly following the parade will be a block party on W 1st St, between Bridge and Oneida St, and will run from 2 PM until 10 PM. The route has changed, and a Grand Marshal has been appointed.

The parade route has been changed slightly. It will still start at Leighton School, takes a left on Liberty, goes to Bridge St, then takes a right on Bridge, and proceeds east. The change is as it crosses the bridge, it will take a left on E 4th St, and head directly to Fort Ontario. In past years, it went down to E 7th St. This change was recommended due to safety concerns. July is quite hot, and the city is worried about student bands getting heat exhaustion. Along with safety concerns, the city is hoping to avoid back up on Schuyler St.

The community development office, among others, has been planning the parade since the beginning of the year. They asked Corradino who the Grand Marshal will be a couple months ago, and he selected Paul Lear. Lear was the longtime director of Fort Ontario, who has recently retired June 19th. Lear has accepted and will be the Grand Marshal.
