Oswego Mayor Cites Accomplishments, Looks To The Future

OSWEGO, NY – It’s Jan. 1 and time for a fresh start, Mayor Randy Bateman told the large crowd at the first council meeting of the new year.

“The 2010 Common Council, which includes two new members, has been chosen and entrusted to work together with this administration to meet the challenges of the coming year,” he said. “As we all know, it takes collaboration and teamwork to accomplish what must be done.”

The mayor then recapped a few of the accomplishments from the previous year.

The Oswego Harbor Trail West project was completed. It extends the Riverwalk West walkway along the lakefront to Breitbeck Park.

The city also completed the final phase of the Eastside Long Term Control Plan by demolishing the Overflow Retention Facility along the east canal way.

The East Oneida Street project, between East First and Second streets, has also been completed. It provides additional parking in the area.

The city also completed the acquisition process for the West Pierhead Lighthouse.

“We have secured a grant and are in the process of developing a plan for the rehabilitation of this historic landmark,” the mayor noted.

In 2010, the city is looking forward to two more major accomplishments.

Currently, the city is in the final stages of negotiation with the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US Department of Justice and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to attain the impending consent order and to generate a long-term control plan to repair the westside sewer system.

The NYS Department of Transportation will also begin the rehabilitation of the Utica Street Bridge.

Work is scheduled to start this spring, the mayor said.

“The project will be suspended over the winter months and resume in the spring of 2011,” he added. “It’s scheduled to be completed by August of 2011.”

“Together with the Common Council, our goal is to continue to make Oswego a better place to live, work and raise a family,” Bateman continued. “We ask for your patience, your suggestions and your confidence as we embark on a voyage to maintain pride, integrity and hope in our great city.”
