The Children’s Museum of Oswego Announces Access Program for Low-Income Families Museums for All

OSWEGO – The Children’s Museum of Oswego announces it has joined Museums for All, a signature access program of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Association of Children’s Museums, to encourage people of all backgrounds to visit museums regularly and build lifelong museum-going habits.

The program supports those receiving food assistance (SNAP) benefits visiting CMOO for a minimal fee of $3 per person, up to four people, with the presentation of a SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer card.

Similar free and reduced admission is available to eligible members of the public at more than 250 museums across the country.

Museums for All is part of the Children’s Museum of Oswego’s broad commitment to seek, include, and welcome all audiences.

Museums for All helps expand access to museums and also raise public awareness about how museums in the U.S. are working to reach their entire communities.

More than 250 institutions participate in the initiative, including art museums, children’s museums, science centers, botanical gardens, zoos, history museums and more.

Participating museums are located nationwide, representing more than 40 states.

CMOO chose to become a partner in the Museums for All program because the museum recognizes that the price of admission can be a barrier for some families.

With the museum expanding in both size and quality during the recent renovation, visitors can expect that regular admission will increase from $5 to $8 per person when the museum re-opens to the public on June 18.

“It’s important to us that our doors are open to all, regardless of income, in the belief that all children should have access to the high quality educational experiences and programs,” said Executive Director Jill Shaver.

Museum visits can make a difference in the educational outcomes of young children.

Studies show that children who visited a museum during kindergarten had higher achievement scores in reading,
mathematics and science than children who did not.

In addition, children who visit museums are better equipped with academic and social skills that will help them succeed in a classroom setting.
