Troopers Investigate Motorcycle Accident in Constantia; Passenger Seriously Injured, Driver Charged

On June 9, State Police responded to a motorcycle accident that occurred on State Route 49 in the town of Constantia.

An investigation has revealed, at approximately 7:30 p.m., a 1999 Honda motorcycle, operated by Richard P. Gilbert, 51, from Bernhards Bay, was traveling eastbound on Route 49 when, after the operator shifted to a higher gear, the passenger sitting behind the operator let go and was ejected from the motorcycle.

The passenger, 49-year-old, Shelly A. Burghart, fell to the road striking her head and face.

She was transported to SUNY Upstate Medical Center and was listed in serious condition.

Gilbert was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 3rd degree (misdemeanor), Improper License Plates, and Unregistered Motorcycle, both violations.

The investigation is continuing.
