White Returns To President’s Chair

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego School Board has a new president and a new vice president.

The position of superintendent, however, is yet to be filled.

At its reorganizational meeting Tuesday night, the board swore in its two new members, Sam Tripp and John Dunsmoor along with returning member Dave White.

White was elected board president by a 5-1-1 roll call vote; board member Fred Maxon cast the lone nay vote and board member Jim Tschudy wasn’t present for the vote.

Sean Madden, Sam Tripp and Maxon were nominated for the vice president position.

Madden and Maxon battled for the position; however, the vote, using paper ballots, stalled at 3-3.

Tschudy arrived about halfway through the meeting.

The VP vote was taken a second time at the end of the reorganizational meeting and Madden was elected, 4-3.

The board tabled a resolution that would have named an interim superintendent of school.

David Fischer, the former superintendent, left the district last month for a superintendent post out of state.

The board wants to have more information before making any decision, White explained.

“We want to look at our options, that’s all. We have two new people coming in so we all just wanted to get some more input on the situation,” he explained.

In the meantime, Bill Crist, assistant superintendent for personnel and human resources, will serve as acting interim superintendent, White said.

“I’m very happy, I appreciate all the support from everybody,” White said of being named board president for the second time in three years. We’ll have to make some tough decisions this year, but I think working together we can reach a consensus of how we can resolve some of these problems. Obviously, people want a little, shall we say, pocketbook relief, which I think we’ve seriously got to look at giving them.”

The board’s next meeting will be July 15 at 5 p.m. in the high school theater.
