Windstorm Cleanup To Begin

OSWEGO, NY – Area residents are cleaning up today after Hurricane Sandy sent high winds blowing across the county late Monday.
Storm damage was reported at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center in the northeast corner of the ice rink about 8:50 p.m. Monday. No details were given.
According to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service, the high winds blew down a tree Monday night on East Mohawk Street between East 12th and 13th streets.
And a section of roof blew of the MWB building in Oswego, he added.
Lights were flickering on and off around the area. Dick Drosse reported he lost power for a short while in Minetto. Power was also out in some sections of Oswego.
Nearly 2,400 residents remain without power around the county. Statewide the number is 1.8 million.
“The wind here never got rolling like it did in some other places,” Gregway said. “We were around 15 to 25 mph for most of the evening. There were a couple of good ones (gusts) to go through; getting up into the 40s.”
The temperature went up Monday night, he added. It was close to 50 degrees at 4 p.m. and by 9 p.m. it was up to 54 degrees, he noted.
Only 0.02-inch of rain fell in the Port City during the day on Monday. Between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. an additional 0.19-inch fell.
Most of the storm damage around the county is downed trees and power lines. National Grid has several crews working to restore power.
The company reminds everyone, if they see downed power lines to avoid them and call National Grid: 1-800-867-5222.
Tuesday will continue to be blustery; but winds won’t be a strong as on Monday, forecasters say.
Sheriff David Gould reports that the Travel Advisory for Cayuga County has been lifted as of Tuesday morning.
