OSWEGO – The Richard S. Shineman Foundation is pleased to announce the positive impact of its $2,500 Community Enrichment Grant, as Fulton Jr. High School students dedicated their time to clean up North Bay Campground. The Community Enrichment Grant was initiated during the spring grant season of 2024 to support local organizations and projects that enhance the quality of life in Oswego County. This initiative reflects the Foundation’s commitment to fostering community development and improving access to resources that benefit residents.
In partnership with the Fulton Garden Club, Fulton Junior High School faculty and staff led a transformative community service project with over 200 eighth-grade students. The students were transported to North Bay Campground in Fulton, where they worked to clean and revitalize the site. According to the final project report, students engaged in a wide range of activities: they created a community garden and tree nursery, repaired the horseshoe pit, mulched trees, painted the flagpole and posts, crafted new signs in technology class, raked tent sites, learned about Lake Neatahwanta’s history, cleaned around the lake, painted a mural near the bathhouse, and planted flowers to beautify the area.
The Class of 2028 contributed a combined 400 hours of community service. This project not only provided students with credit toward the Seal of Civic Readiness—a graduation distinction—but also brought new attention to the campground, potentially boosting city revenue. “Students learned valuable lessons about community involvement that we hope will extend to future projects throughout the city,” said Denise Rodriguez, a teacher involved in the initiative.
The Richard S. Shineman Foundation congratulates the Fulton Jr. High staff and students on their success. In a letter of appreciation, Foundation Director Chena Tucker noted, “Our Grant Assessment Committee awarded this project our highest rating of ‘transformative,’ a distinction reserved for exceptional projects that exceed expectations, profoundly impact the community, foster strong collaboration, and earn widespread recognition. Your project surpassed all of these benchmarks.”
The Community Enrichment Grant provides funding for innovative projects that meet the diverse needs of our community. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, schools, and community groups dedicated to positively impacting areas such as education, health and wellness, the arts, and civic engagement.
Applications for the Community Enrichment Grant will be accepted until October 4th, 2024, for the fall 2024 grant season. They will be reviewed for determination on November 14th, 2024. Interested organizations are encouraged to visit the Richard S. Shineman Foundation’s website at www.shinemanfoundation.org and click the “Apply For A Grant” tab for detailed information.
The Foundation invites the community to explore this new grant opportunity and looks forward to supporting initiatives that inspire growth, connection, and a shared vision for a vibrant future in Oswego County.
