Salmon River Winter Festival Returns One Week Earlier

PULASKI – The 13th annual Salmon River Winter Festival will take place Friday, January 19 through Sunday, January 21. Enjoy a weekend of family fun and delicious food challenges throughout Pulaski, Richland, Sandy Creek and Altmar. 

The annual macaroni and cheese, chili and chicken wing challenges return. Competitions kick off on Friday from 4-9 p.m., starting with macaroni and cheese. They continue over the weekend from 12-6 p.m. both days, with the wing walk on Saturday and chili tasting on Sunday. 

Tasting portions are two ounces for macaroni and cheese and chili, and two-wing samples for the wing walk.

Ballots will be sold starting Tuesday, January 16 at the Half-Shire Historical Society in Richland and Designs of Elegance in Pulaski for a pre-sale discount of $18 for all three food challenges. Starting Friday, January 19, single-day ballots will be sold at each participating location. Ballots are $5 each for the macaroni and cheese and chili food challenges and $10 for the wing walk.  

On Friday night, enjoy a live music at the Kallet Theater from 6:30-10 p.m. with Crazy Neighbors. Admission is $5. The Kallet Theater is located at 4842 Jefferson St. in Pulaski. 

On Saturday, join the Half-Shire Historical Society for opening ceremonies at the Grant Memorial Barn, located behind the main building. A ceremonial torch lighting will take place at noon, followed by a performance by the Lake Ontario Broom Riders. Throughout the weekend, the Half-Shire Historical Society will also host a craft show with free coffee, tea and hot cocoa from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

After casting your vote for your favorite foods, head over to Selkirk Shores State Park on Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. for some winter fun. There will be horse-drawn wagon rides, a kid’s scavenger hunt, winter crafts, snacks and hot cocoa. Weather permitting, a bonfire and free snowshoe rentals will also be offered. Selkirk Shores State Park is located at 7101 NYS Rte. 3, Pulaski.  

On Saturday and Sunday, the Sandy Pond Sportsmen’s Association hosts a snow sculpture contest. Contestants can build a snowman in their yard and send a photo to the group or go to the club, located at 3201 Co. Rte. 15 in Sandy Pond, to create their snowman. Awards will be given for creativity, originality and effort. For more information or to enter the contest, contact Denise at 315-387-6310.

The Salmon River Winter Festival is an annual event coordinated by the Half-Shire Historical Society. Proceeds from the food challenges fund the group’s Emma Schroeder Scholarship, which is given to an exceptional graduating senior in Pulaski. Additional proceeds will go toward relocation costs of a railroad depot to the Half-Shire Historical Society in Richland.
