OSWEGO COUNTY – As part of Oswego County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) ongoing crime prevention efforts, OCSO announces a Fraud Prevention & Scam Awareness Night, which is a seminar designed to help older adults, family members and caregivers recognize and avoid common scams targeting seniors. This free presentation providing practical information to defend against fraud will be hosted at the Oswego County Regional Police Academy, located at Cayuga Community College, Fulton Campus, 11 Glen River Crossing on February 3rd at 7:00 P.M. The Sheriff’s Office will be joined by local banks, credit unions and Oswego County Office of the Aging to educate local residents.
According to the New York State Office for the Aging, 75% of adults aged 50 – 80 reported experiencing a scam attempt and 30% experienced fraud. Additionally, AARP estimates that financial exploitations costs victims 60 years and older $28.3 billion annually.
Sheriff Don Hilton explains, “For law enforcement, we are focused on holding the perpetrators of scams accountable but also doing whatever we can to protect potential victims by educating them about how the scams work and what to watch out for. Our hope is that this seminar can reach as many people as possible to help protect them and empower them through education.”
The event will cover topics such as recent/common scam types, tips for fraud prevention, and what to do if you’ve been scammed. Participants will learn how to slow down and investigate unsolicited communications they may receive by phone, email, social media or in person. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and learn strategies to protect their financial information and assets.
Registration is optional and walk-ins will be accepted the night of the event, as the space accommodates. For those who want to reserve a spot and register ahead of time, email [email protected] or call 315-593-9325.
