MEXICO, NY – State Police in Pulaski investigated a tractor-trailer/pickup truck crash that occurred yesterday, January 28, on State Route 104 in the town of Mexico, which resulted in three non-life-threatening injuries.
According to State Police, the investigation had revealed, at approximately 11:40 a.m., a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck, operated by Shamus P. McDowell, age 23 from Mexico, New York, was traveling east on Rt. 104 when he crossed over into the westbound lane and struck a 2006 Kenworth tractor-trailer, operated by Lawrence E. Wallace, age 67, from Cato, New York, head-on.
The tractor-trailer continued off the north shoulder of the roadway.
According to the Mexico Volunteer Fire Department[1], “McFee Ambulance was first on scene and confirmed entrapment and requested a third ambulance. Within about 10 minutes of 1421 arriving, both patients were extricated and moved to ambulances with various injuries. 1401 declared a level 4 hazmat due to the tractor trailer. State Route 104 remained closed for a few hours while everything was cleaned up.”
According to State Police, Wallace was transported to Upstate University Hospital for a shoulder injury.
McDowell was transported to Upstate University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 21-year-old female passenger in the pickup was transported to Upstate University Hospital for a minor knee injury.
The NYS DEC Spill Response responded to the scene due to approximately 60 gallons of fuel leaking from the tractor-trailer’s fuel tank.
The investigation is continuing.
