Alfio “Freddy” Lanza

Alfio “Freddy” Lanza, 87, died March 1, 2016, at his home in Randazzo, Sicily, Province of Catania, Italy, after a long illness. Born in 1928, he was one of eight (8) children. At age 15, in 1943, he assisted Italian Partisans in Sicily alongside American and British soldiers fighting German Troops. His Italian unit was incorporated into the United States 5th Army as a “Pack Mule Regiment” charged with the job of providing ammunition and supplies to the allied armies in the Sicilian mountains and countryside. He fought in many campaigns up the Italian boot until the end of the war. After the war, he was a police officer in Ravenna, Italy. He also owned and ran a grocery store in his hometown.
In 1956, he followed his father in-law to the Untied States and resided in Syracuse, NY. He became a US Citizen. In the U.S., he worked as a construction laborer. In 1966 he purchased and ran a bakery in Fulton, NY called LaFornarina Bakery and later added a pizza shop in 1980 called Lanza Pizza. He worked at the Bakery until 1991 when he retired. He maintained residences in the United States and Italy.
Surviving him are his wife, Teresa (Gullotto), daughter, Dr. Antoinette
(John) Lanza-Spinosa of Baldwinsville, NY, son Salvatore (Katrina) F. Lanza, Esq., of Volney, NY and two (2) granddaughters, Dr. Margaret Spinosa of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Gabriella Lanza of Volney, NY. Burial was in Randazzo, Sicily.
