OSWEGO, NY – William Lee Martin, 79, of Oswego and Sun City Center, Florida, died unexpectedly on Saturday August 13, 2016, at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse following a brief illness.
Born in Oswego, he was the son of the late Lee R. and Viola (Mayer) Martin.
He was a graduate of St. John’s School, Oswego High School and the State University College at Oswego.
He served in the United States Naval Reserve for 12 years.
He resided in Central Square for 41 years before moving back home to Oswego.
Mr. Martin taught technology and driver’s education at the Central Square High School for 27 years and taught driver’s education during the summer for many years at C-NS High School.
He was a handyman who could fix almost anything including small engines.
He loved to golf and tend to his garden but most of all he enjoyed all the time he spent with his family and friends.
He was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers, Oswego County Retired Teachers, American Legion Post 913 in Central Square, the Central Square Teachers Golf League and the Tuesday Night Golf League.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former Anne Heagerty; two daughters, Kathy (Leonard Jr.) Hass of Central Square and Peggy (Larry) Smith of Florida; a son, William (Joan) Martin Jr. of Fulton; three grandsons, Charles Monday of Oregon and Kyle and James Martin of Fulton; a brother, Thomas (Pegi) Martin of Florida; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret (James) Walsh of the state of Washington; and four brothers-in-law, David (Catherine) Heagerty of Florida, Richard (Ellen) Heagerty of Oswego, James (Sandra) Heagerty of Spencerport and John (Constance) Heagerty of Camillus.
He was predeceased by his sister, Rosamund Davidson.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. from St. Stephen’s Church with the Monsignor John Heagerty celebrating.
Entombment will be in All Saints’ Mausoleum.
Friends may call at the Dowdle Funeral Home on Wednesday from 3 – 6 p.m.
