Joseph N. Campolieta, 85, of Fulton, died Sunday at Oswego Hospital.

A native of Syracuse, he resided in Fulton since 1954. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy where he played football, basketball and baseball. Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1945-1947 in the military police and on the boxing team.

Following his military service, he was in the first graduating class in 1951 at LeMoyne College where he received his teaching degree and hit the first home run for the school baseball team. He attended Syracuse University where he received his master’s degree in education and school administrator’s certificate.

Joe was hired as a social studies teacher in the Fulton City School District and coached football. Later he became vice principal then principal of the Fulton High School until his retirement. The school’s National Honor Society named their chapter after Joe. He was a three year member of the Fulton City School District Board of Education.

Joe was a communicant of  Holy Trinity Church in Fulton and had served as a lector and on the Parish Council. He was a member of the N.Y.S. Teachers Association, the former Italian American Club and played softball with the Fulton Men’s City Softball League where he received many awards.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Lois Campolieta of Fulton; three sons, Joseph (Nancy) Campolieta  of Simsbury, CT, Paul (Rhonda) and Robert (Laura) Campolieta all of Fulton; six grandchildren, Daniel, Mary, Alaina, Sara, Brett and Katherine Campolieta; three sisters, Jenny Herron and Antoinette (Stanley) Kowalczyk of Syracuse and Gilda (Thomas) Sayles of Lafayette; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 9:30 AM Friday, April 8, 2011 at Holy Trinity Church, corner of Rochester and South Third Streets, Fulton with burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fulton. Calling hours are 4 to 8 PM Thursday at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton.
