OSWEGO COUNTY – Leona Lou Smith, 86, of Scriba, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2024, at Oswego Hospital after a long illness.
She was born on February 6, 1938, to Kenneth L. “Pat” and Marion L (Hall) Sherman in New Haven. Leona was a 1956 graduate of Mexico High School. She worked at General Electric for several years before becoming a stay-at-home mom in 1971.
Leona volunteered in the Oak Street and Lanigan Elementary school libraries before returning to work at Price Chopper in 1982. She worked at both the Fulton and Baldwinsville stores before her retirement in 1992.
She was a weight recorder for the TOPS Fulton and Palermo Chapters for many years, as well as a one-time treasurer for Volney Senior Citizens.
Leona collected owl figurines and enjoyed bird watching. You could always find a bird feeder and extra bird seed at her home. She enjoyed listening to music, especially Elvis, of whom she was a lifetime fan. One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards with her husband, Gordon, where she would always beat him at every game. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile and contagious laugh, that would bring joy to anyone around her.
On June 27, 1959, she married Gordon C. Smith of New Haven, who passed away on April 18, 2024. Leona was also predeceased by a son, Gordon E. Smith, and a brother, Lawrence L. Sherman.
She is survived by her children, Scott (Melissa) Smith and Joanne Littler; three grandchildren, Ryan Littler, Leanna (Bryan) Littler-Woolf and Trevor (Brittany) Littler; one great-grandson, and sisters, Louise Meyer and Betty (William) Kane.
Calling hours are Thursday, December 5, 2024 from 11:00am to 1:00pm with a service to immediately follow at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay St., Fulton, NY 13069. Burial will follow at Vermillion Cemetery, New Haven.
