William R. ‘Bill’ Burtis, 72

FULTON, NY – William R. “Bill” Burtis, 72 of Fulton passed away Wednesday January 23, 2013, at home.
Born in Fulton, he was a life resident of the area.
In 1986, Bill had founded Sanford and Burtis Fire Equipment and retired in 2007.
He was a member and past president of Fulton Lions Club, member of Syracuse Executives Association and was a member and past governor of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1280, Fulton.
Bill was a legend in his own mind whose life was a work in progress.
A true cowboy at heart who relished life and was proud of his never ending list of accomplishments from marrying his one true love to having beautiful children and grandchildren, a countless number of near and dear friends and acquaintances, striving to achieve his dreams of owning his own business as well as his own private bar, Saloon No. 10.
An avid outdoorsman, he thrived on hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, camping “plus much, much more.”
Auctions were a favorite pastime as well as emulating John Wayne and Johnny Cash.
He had a deep appreciation for NASCAR, the man in black, books, history, travel (namely Vegas) and not to mention a sweet tooth for chocolate, PBR, Manhattans and the “occasional cigarette.”
He was a superb prankster and master storyteller who kept us all amused as well as on our toes.
Bill possessed the undeterred, charismatic, nonchalant demeanor that was the envy of many.
His simple existence left an astounding impact on all those who had the privilege of crossing paths with him.
He was our mentor, idol and hero and will forever be cherished as such.
He lived life with no excuses, no apologies and no fear but in the end and in the words of John Wayne, “Well, there are some things a man just can’t run away from,” and in the words of Bill Burtis, “Why walk when you can ride?”
He will be greatly missed and forever loved by his wife of 45 years, the former Julie A. Sheldon; children, Karen (Randy) Stoughtenger, Elizabeth (William) Clark and Steven Luke (Kimberley); grandchildren, Nathan, Mallory, Lucas and Sophie.
Calling hours will be noon to 3 p.m. Sunday with a service immediately following at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay St, Fulton.
