Robert  Baker

OSWEGO – Robert  Baker, 93, of Oswego, passed away on May 22, 2026, with his loving family by his side. Born in Albany, New York, on May 13, 1933, he was the son of the late Robert and Josephine (Nilo) Baker.

Bob grew up in Guilderland and graduated from Albany High School, Class of 1951. He joined the U.S. Navy in February 1954 and was honorably discharged on December 24, 1957. A Korean War veteran, he held the rank of First Class ET, serving on the submarine tender USS Fulton and the guided missile heavy cruiser USS Canberra. A 1962 graduate of RPI with a BSEE degree, he was also a licensed New York State Professional Engineer. In 1963, he was employed by Niagara Mohawk Power Company. In 1965, he was selected to staff the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Plant. On January 2, 1966, he moved to Oswego. He served as Plant Maintenance Manager until 1976, when he was hired by PASNY as Maintenance Manager at the JAF Nuclear Plant. He retired on April 1, 2000. Bob met the love of his life, Sandra A. Dlubac, on January 1, 1955. They were married on August 4, 1957. She supported their family throughout his college years from September 1958 through May 1962. Together, they raised three children, Robert, Karen, and Judith.

He was a member of St. Mary’s and St. Paul’s churches. At St. Mary’s, he relocated the organ, replaced the carillon system, repaired lighting problems, repaired the wind motor for the organ, and served as a money counter for more than 30 years. He also served as a money counter at Christ the Good Shepherd at St. Paul’s. Bob was a Construction Board member for the Oswego chapter of Habitat for Humanity, where he designed and managed the construction of three new homes and the rehabilitation of others. At the Safe Haven Museum, he remodeled the building to house exhibits. He was a lifetime member of Oswego Elks Lodge 271. Town of Oswego: Member of the Board of Assessment Review for more than 40 years and a  Member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for more than 30 years.

Bob’s first priority was the care of his family. He enjoyed traveling with family, woodworking, electronics, mechanical work, taking care of his home, and playing card games with friends and family. Most of all, he enjoyed life, family, and holidays spent together with loved ones.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Sandra, children Robert James (Rachel) Baker, Karen (Dave) Hovey, and Judith Anne (Dolph) Beyer, and grandchildren Michael (Sarah) Beyer, Alexandra Paige Beyer, Daniel Beyer, Marissa Hovey, Allison Hovey, Elizabeth Baker, and Andrew Baker. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Carter Beyer and Logan Beyer, sisters Marion Blanchett and Sue Baker, brothers Thomas Baker and Bruce Baker, as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Baker.

Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, from 4-6 pm at Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany Street.  A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at St Mary of the Assumption Parish and Shrine.  Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
