David J. O’Neil, 89, a resident of 267 West 8th Street in Oswego, passed away Tuesday, in the Manor at Seneca Hill.
Mr. O’Neil was born in Oswego, the son of the late Thomas and Ethel (Guilford)
O’Neil. He was a life resident.
He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps, and served in England during WWII.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed in the maintenance department of SUNY-Oswego. He had previously worked at the Ames Iron Works, and at the Cyclotherm Corp. in Oswego.
Mr. O’Neil was a 50-year member of the Oswego Ancient Order of Hibernians. He also belonged to the American Legion Post #268 and VFW Posts #5885 and #2320.
He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed playing horseshoes at the AOH.
Mr. O’Neil was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, and a former communicant of St. John’s Church.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Ellen (Daly) O’Neil, who died in 1983; and his second wife, Jessie (Parkhurst) O’Neil, who died in 1991.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Mary Anne (Robert) Zuber of Oswego, and Nancy (Karl) Slobe of Scriba; 5 grandchildren, James (Terri) Muckey, Robert (Cindy) Zuber Jr., Sharon (Walter) DeLand, Jennifer Zuber, and Karl Slobe Jr.; 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his many brother and sister Hibernians in Oswego, whom he regarded as family.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00am Saturday, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, and at 9:30am in St. Mary’s Church.
Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 7:00pm Friday, at the funeral home, 112 East Second in Oswego.
