OSWEGO, NY – Dr. Joseph Edward Mather, 56, of Oswego Town, passed away Friday July 13, 2012, at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester.

Born November 5, 1955, in Valley Stream, NY, he was the son Dr. Joseph E. Mather of Oswego and the late Mary Jane (Fayette) Mather.
He graduated from Bishop Cunningham High School in 1973 and University of Notre Dame in 1977.
He married Victoria Loebel in 1980; they recently celebrated their 32nd anniversary.
Dr. Joe graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine 1982.
He was Chief Resident and completed his medical residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at SUNY Upstate and became a board certified member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
He was an active member of the Oswego Hospital medical staff, current member of the Oswego Health Board. Former chairman of the Oswego Health Board, he served on the Quality Improvement Committee for the medical staff and board, as well as the Corporate Resources Committee of Oswego Health and Governance Committee. He also chaired the Founder’s Club the fundraising arm of the health system.
He was a coach and member of the Oswego Youth Soccer Association, helping to build the soccer fields.
He was a member of Oswego Yacht Club. For the past two years he was a tutor with Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County. He was also the president of the Hall Newman Foundation.
A life-long family man, Joe loved his wife, enjoyed laughing with his children whom he was immensely proud of, sailing with his friends and family, playing the piano and singing (poorly), visiting Saint Croix and New Orleans and cheering for Notre Dame football.
He is survived by his father; his wife, Vicki; four children, Dr. Joseph A. Mather and Michelle Gardner of New Orleans, Caroline Mather and Jason Latiolais of Florida, William J. and Thomas L. Mather both students of Loyola University, New Orleans; his siblings, Christopher (Mary Lou) Mather of Ohio, Patrick (Lois) Mather of Baldwinsville, Timothy (Deborah) Mather of Colorado, Daniel (Cindy) Mather of Oswego and Katherine (Michael) Herrmann of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Church, 103 W. Seventh St., Oswego.
Calling hours will be held 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hall Newman Center or Oswego Health.
