Dr. Willard (Will) Schum

OSWEGO, NY – Dr. Willard (Will) Schum formerly of Oswego, was born in Cheektowaga, NY, and died in Venice, Fla., on September 29, 2013.
Will received his PhD in education at University of Buffalo and served as an aerial photographer in the US Navy during the Korean War 1950 – 1954.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Joan (Klima) Schum; sons, Joseph R. Schum (Debora) of Atlanta, Ga., and Michael R. Schum of Richmond, Va.
Will was principal of Swetman Learning Center and retired as an Associate Dean from State University of New York at Oswego.
He founded the Safe Haven Museum where 182 refugees were housed under President FDR during World War II.
Will was president of Partners of Americas and spearheaded efforts to provide relief during the island of Monserratt’s 1997 volcano tragedy.
Will was president of American Field Services to provide lodging to foreign exchange students attending school in the US. For his efforts he received Oswego’s highest recognition, the Community Service Award.
In Venice, Will volunteered at Bon Secours and Venice Regional hospitals for 18 years and was a member of the Venice American Legion.
He was president of Oswego Rotary and assistant governor of Venice Rotary.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Church.
