Edward Prucnal, 84, a resident of 128 Tallman Street, Oswego, died after a short illness October 18, 2011 at Seneca Manor Senior Living Center.
Ed was Born January 9, 1927 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of the late Julian (Benny) and Rose (Krawczyk) Prucnal. He was predeceased by his younger brother Julian Prucnal Jr., in 1986.
From Oct’44 to Dec’46 Ed was an airplane mechanic with the Army Air Corps in France. He attained the rank of corporal and was part of the ground crew that serviced a Northup P61 “Black Widow”, the first operational U.S. aircraft designed specifically for the night interception of enemy aircraft. After the service he stayed in Europe for four years as Chief Administrator for Civilians in Paris. In later years he often regaled members of the family with his stories of exploring Europe in an Austin Healy convertible at the time.
While in Paris Ed successfully graduated from a fashion design school there and became a designer of hats in Paris and later had his own shop outside of Chicago. As the hat business declined he became a hair stylist at Marshall Fields in Chicago and Frost Brothers in San Antonio.
After 33 years in San Antonio, Texas, in 2002 Ed left his home there and his treasured pecan trees and returned to Oswego to be near family. Over the years he won many awards for his stained glass, embroidery work and homemade wines.
Surviving is his aunt, Helen Ciesla; uncle, Walter Celestian; close cousins, Carol (Glen) Pearsall, Connie (Jack) Reingold, Walter (Cindy) Ciesla, Mary Ann (Mike) Conaway, and Ben (Betty) Beginski; and favorite nieces, Chris Botting and Gail Le Clerk.
Ed’s ashes will be buried in the Fort Sam Houston Veterans Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas near his lifelong friend, Richard Berard.
