Ernest B. Luongo, 88, a resident of Oswego, passed away October 2, 2011.

Born in Staten Island, he was the son of the late Albert and Adeline (Severino) Luongo.

He received his Master’s Degree at SUNY Cortland and Advanced Studies at Syracuse University.

Ernie served in the US Marine Corp during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He taught and coached baseball, soccer and basketball at Middleburgh Central Schools in Middleburgh, NY from 1953-1957.

He was a Professor of Health and Physical Education at SUNY Oswego from 1957-1985. He is one of the earliest drug education voices in the State University system. He is the author of numerous scientific articles related to critical health issues.

In 1967, he was appointed Chief of the Bureau of Professional Education for the New York State Narcotics Addiction Control Commission.

He was the Men’s Soccer Varsity Coach from 1957-1966. In 1966, he coached the team to it’s first State Conference Championship.

Surviving are two daughters, Laurie (Bob Gulian) Luongo of Katonah, NY; Elaine Riley of Danbury, Conn; a son, Laurence (Nancy) Luongo of Honolulu, Hawaii; a sister, Edith Bonney of California; five grandchildren, Justin Luongo, Nina Luongo, Robin Luongo, Will Riley and Tess Riley.

Memorial Services will be held at 1p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Resurrection, 120 West Fifth St. Oswego.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Church of the Resurrection or the charity of ones choice.
