FULTON, NY – Jack “John” Lavaway, 71, of Fulton passed away on Thursday November 30, 2017, at Oswego Hospital, Oswego, after a long illness.
He was born in Amberg, Germany, to the late Robert and Hildegard (Staffius) Lavaway.
Mr. Lavaway has been a resident of Fulton since the 1970s.
He was a proud American Disabled Veteran having served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1965-67.
He retired from CT Light & Power after 33 years where he worked as an electrician.
Mr. Lavaway was also employed with National Grid and the Veterans’ Administration Hospital.
Mr. Lavaway was a member and past commander of the following veteran groups: Fulton VFW Post #569, Tarpon Springs VFW, Florida, and AMVETS, Florida.
He was also a member of the Fulton Polish Home.
Mr. Lavaway is survived by his wife, Rita Lavaway, of Fulton; three sons: Karl Lavaway, Mathew Lavaway and Sean Lavaway all of Parish, NY; four step-children: Mandy Vieni of Fulton, John Schloeder of South Carolina, Nicole Halsey of Cleveland, NY, and Corey Halsey of Fulton; his brother, Mark Lavaway of Connecticut and Florida; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be conducted 4 – 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Sugar Funeral Home, Inc., 224 W. Second St. S., Fulton, with the funeral service to follow at 6 p.m., with Rev. Sandra Rude officiating.
internment will be held privately in Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY, with military honors to be bestowed by the United States Navy Honor Guard.
