OSWEGO, NY – Joseph J. Paeno, 72, of Oswego, passed away at his home on Tuesday March 7, 2017, after a long illness.

Mr. Paeno was born in Oswego.
He remained a lifetime resident of Oswego.
In his earlier years, Mr. Paeno was an altar boy at St. Joseph’s Church and he was involved the church sporting events, plays and many other activities.
Mr. Paeno was past employed as a meat cutter for Bosco and Geers, Oswego.
He was an avid fisherman and worked as a charter boat captain of the Ambassador.
Mr. Paeno was a licensed mechanic and he owned and operated Joe’s Sunoco Gas Station, Oswego.
He also snowplowed for many city residents for several years.
Mr. Paeno retired from the Oswego City Fire Department, where he served from 1967-1990 as a firefighter and a member of the Oswego Fire Department Dive Team.
Mr. Paeno ran a drift boat on the Oswego River and he was the recipient of an award in recognition for an act of heroism in the Oswego River in January 1986.
Family time was always important to him and his wife.
They enjoyed watching him race from 1973 to the mid-1980s driving the super modified cars at the Oswego Speedway where he was known as “Fireman Joe Paeno” and with ISMA where they traveled the northeast to race.
Mr. Paeno and his wife were also avid supporters of their daughters with their individual activities.
The family has a lot of memories of traveling to ice skating events where they watched and cheered their daughters while they competed.
He was predeceased by his father, John Paeno; and his brother-in-law, Harold Roe.
Mr. Paeno is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jackie Paeno of Oswego; mother, Mayme C. Paeno of Oswego; daughters: Tonya Paeno of Florida and Tracy (Craig Soper) Paeno-Rigby of Oswego; his brother, John (Lynn) Paeno of Oswego; his sister, Joanne (Don) Teifke of Mexico; and the light of his life grandson, Tyler Joseph Rigby who loving called Mr. Paeno “Pop.”
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church, Oswego.
Spring burial will be held in North Scriba Union Cemetery, Scriba, NY.
Calling hours will be conducted 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home, 147 W. Fourth St., Oswego.
