Homer Gordon, 83, of Oswego passed away early Friday morning, November 6, 2009. He was born June 16, 1926 to the late Phillip and Amelia Gordon. He was predeceased by his 5 siblings, including his loving, younger brother, Ralph.
Upon graduating from Oswego High School, Homer entered the Army and served overseas in Europe and in the liberation of the Nordhausen Concentration Camp. In Homer’s typical unassuming way, these actions were never revealed to his family until recently. Following the war, Homer attended Syracuse University and graduated from Rider College. He then returned to Oswego where he was owner and President of Phillip Gordon and Sons Scrap Metal Dealers for over 60 years. Homer served as president and lifetime member of Congregation Adath Israel in Oswego, a member of Temple Beth El of Syracuse for 20 years and a member of the Jewish War Veterans.
Homer was a good man who led a full and happy life doing the things he loved best; being with his loving wife and family and engaging with customers at his business. His last days were symbolic of his life, filled with gentle kindness and humor.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 56 years, Arleen (Montivid) of Rochester, N.Y.; his beloved children Phil Gordon of Oswego, Cindy Gordon of Atlanta and Barbara and Alan Kaplan of Atlanta; grandchildren Molly, Jonathan and Danielle Kaplan and Lindsey Gordon.
Calling hours will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 7th at the Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego
A private burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Services will be held at 12 noon at the funeral home on Sunday, November 8, 2009.
The family requests no flowers and that contribution may be made to Congregation Adath Israel, East Third and Oneida Streets, Oswego, N.Y. 13126.
