Joyce E. Sumner, 71, of Fulton, died Monday at home after a long courageous battle with liver disease.  She was the daughter of Martin and Beatrice Madeline Bower Turner.  Joyce was a graduate of S.U.N.Y. at Geneseo where she received her bachelors degree in education.  She taught in the Fulton Consolidated School System at Lanigan Elementary School in Fulton and Volney Elementary School in Volney.  Joyce was a member of State Street United Methodist Church where she was financial secretary, chairperson of the Pastor Relations Committee, choir member and played flute solos.  She was a member of both the Fulton and Hannibal Community Bands.  Joyce was an active member of the Fulton Quilt Guild.  She was an avid golfer.

Surviving are her husband of 44 years, Fred Sumner of Fulton; her children, Gregory (Nancy) Sumner of Conquest and Elizabeth (David) Nevin of Fulton; four grandchildren, Mary, Katherine, Leland Sumner and Aodhan Nevin; three sisters, her twin, Judith Capozzi of Fulton, Beatrice Kay (Richard) Bennett of Kingman, AZ and Dianne (Roy) Wilson of Rochester; six nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Foster Funeral Home, Fulton with burial at Fairdale Rural Cemetery in Hannibal.  Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to State Street United Methodist Church, 357 State Street, Fulton, 13069 or to the American Red Cross, Oswego Chapter, 129 West Second Street, Oswego, 13126.
