OCO Offers Help For Those Seeking Children’s Health Insurance

OSWEGO, NY – In recognition of National Child’s Health Day on Oct. 5, Oswego County Opportunities would like to remind Oswego County residents that they are available to help families and individuals access the comprehensive health insurance they need.

While the focus of National Child’s Health Day is to encourage children to eat healthy and be active, Oswego County Opportunities encourages parents and caregivers to make sure that their children have access to quality healthcare when needed.

“National Child’s Health Day serves as a perfect time to stop and evaluate the healthcare needs of our children and see to it that they have the health insurance coverage they need,” said Senior Facilitated Enroller with OCO’s Health Division, Allen Wert.

OCO’s Health Division offers Facilitated Enrollment into New York State’s Child Health Plus as well as Medicaid and Family Health Plus programs.

OCO’s trained staff provides the information and assistance necessary so that those eligible can benefit from these programs.

“We do much more than just hand out information,” explained Wert. “We work as an advocate for those seeking health care coverage.  Our staff ensures that they have the proper documents, meet the eligibility requirements for the program, and assists with filling out the necessary paperwork. OCO is also unique in that we are able to offer assistance with any underlying issues that they may have by referring them to agencies and programs that can provide them with the help they need to effectively deal with those issues, whatever they may be.”

So far in 2009, OCO has completed more than 1,300 applications and enrolled 997 children in the Child Health Plus program as well as 951 adults in other health insurance programs.

As a result, these individuals received a wide range of health care benefits including: regular medical checkups and immunizations, prescriptions, dental services, lab tests, x-rays, urgent care and emergency room visits, inpatient hospital care and more.

“We are happy to be providing this much needed service. Our Facilitated Enrollment service is available year round at 9 convenient locations throughout Oswego County, many of which offer extended hours for the public’s convenience.  I encourage those without health insurance coverage to contact OCO’s Health Division at 342-0888, ext. 1450, to learn more about New York State’s Child Health Plus, Medicaid and Family Health Plus programs and discover how OCO can assist them with their health care needs by getting those eligible enrolled and have them begin receiving the health care they need, said Wert.”
