In recognition of National Child’s Health Day, Oswego County Opportunities would like to remind Oswego County residents that they are available to help families and individuals access the comprehensive health insurance they need.

While the focus of National Child’s Health Day is to encourage children to eat healthy and be active, Oswego County Opportunities encourages parents and caregivers to make sure that their children have access to quality healthcare when needed.  “National Child’s Health Day serves as a perfect time to stop and evaluate the healthcare needs of our children and see to it that they have the health insurance coverage they need,” said Jennifer Worden, Coordinator of Outreach, Education and Enrolment Services for OCO’s Health Division.

OCO’s Health Division offers Facilitated Enrollment into New York State’s Child Health Plus as well as Medicaid and Family Health Plus programs.  OCO’s trained staff provides the information and assistance necessary so that those eligible can benefit from these programs.

“We do more than just hand out information,” explained Worden.  “In many ways we work as an advocate for those seeking health care coverage.  Our staff ensures that they have the proper documents, meet the eligibility requirements for the program, and assists with filling out the necessary paperwork.  OCO is also unique in that we are able to offer assistance with any underlying issues that they may have by referring them to agencies and programs that can provide them with the help they need to effectively deal with those issues, whatever they may be,” said Ms. Worden.

In 2007, OCO completed more than 2,100 applications and enrolled 1,580 children in the Child Health Plus program as well as 1,082 adults in other health insurance programs.  As a result, these individuals received a wide range of health care benefits including: regular medical checkups and immunizations, prescriptions, dental services, lab tests, x-rays, emergency room visits, hospital care and more.

“We are happy to be providing this much needed service,” said Allen Wert, Senior Facilitated Enroller with OCO.  “Our Facilitated Enrollment service is available year round at 11 locations throughout Oswego County, many of which offer extended hours for the public’s convenience.  We truly are advocates.  We simply do not distribute a list of requirements and rules to follow.  Our goal is to follow thru with the process, get them enrolled and have them see a doctor.”

Ms. Worden added that those without health insurance coverage are urged to contact OCO’s Health Division at 598-9361, ext. 1, to learn more about New York State’s Child Health Plus, Medicaid and Family Health Plus programs and discover how OCO can assist you with your health care needs.

“OCO is unique in that our Health Division offers a wide range of health care services.  Those who are not eligible to take advantage of the Child Health Plus, Medicaid or Family Health Plus program may be able to access the care they need through one of OCO’s health services.  We are here to help and we are happy to do so,” said Ms. Worden.
