Offense Erupts In Oswego State Men’s Ice Hockey 7-1 Win Over Brockport

OSWEGO, N.Y – The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team continued its winning ways on home ice, as they pounced on the visiting Golden Eagles of Brockport, scoring two goals in the first 1:34 of play. The Lakers never looked back as they skated to a 7-1 victory. Goaltender Daniel Jones (Jr., Richmond Hill, Ont.) recorded 27 saves on 28 shots en route to his first victory of the season. The Lakers’ overpowering offense was led by the line of Luke Moodie, Paul Rodrigues and Jon Whitelaw who combined for seven points, including four goals.

The Lakers’ first goal came 40 seconds into the opening frame as Paul Rodrigues (Jr., Etobicoke, Ont.) carried the puck down the right wing into the Brockport zone, and fed a pass to linemate Jon Whitelaw(Jr., Huntsville, Ont.) who one timed the puck past goaltender Joe Reagan on the stick side.

Oswego State continued its fast start as Matt Singleton (Jr., Whitby, Ont.) scored in his second straight game 56 seconds later. Tallying the assists on the goal were Chris Ayotte (Jr., Cornwall, Ont.) and Nick Rivait(Fr., Kingsville, Ont), who registered his first collegiate point.

After a barrage of penalties late in the period, the Lakers went to the penalty box three times in a span of four minutes. Oswego State’s penalty kill stood tall however, receiving numerous key saves from Jones and a number of key blocked shots from the penalty killers.

The second period began with the Lakers killing off the remaining seven seconds of the penalty allowing the Laker offense to get back in rhythm for the remainder of the period.

Oswego State’s third goal came at the tail end of a hard-working shift where it controlled the puck from corner to corner. Chris Muise (Jr., Oakville, Ont.) corralled the puck in the corner and fired a cross rink pass to defender Tim Carr (Jr., Burlington, Ont.), who wristed a shot on goal, which was deflected by Ayotte through the legs of the goaltender to take a 3-0 lead at intermission.

The Lakers began the third period with a man advantage as a late second period Brockport penalty proved to be costly for the Golden Eagles . Oswego State’s power play finally converted on its sixth opportunity of the night as Rodrigues received a pass on the half wall from defenseman Zack Josepher (Jr., Wantagh, N.Y.) and sent a centering pass to Moodie, who fired a shot high over the blocker side into the net.

Kyle Badham (So. Oakville, Ont) put the game out of reach four minutes later for the Lakers with the fifth goal of the night on a wrap around on the glove side off a back pass from David Titanic (So., Markham, Ont.). Ayotte threaded the needle with a long stretch pass to a streaking Rodrigues, who split the Golden Eagle defense en route his third point of the night as he deked Brockport’s goalie to the glove side and tucked the puck in the empty net at 8:30 in the third stanza.

Oswego State’s high octane offense continued to pressure the Brockport defense as Whitelaw tallied the Lakers’ final goal on a partial breakaway as he beat the goalie on a deke to the glove side. Luke Moodie received his second point of the night, registering the assist on the goal.

The lone Brockport tally came late in the third period when Bobby Conner found a loose puck in the slot and beat Jones on the stick side. The shutout-ending goal came with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

Golden Eagle goalie Joe Reagan kept the visiting team in the game until the third period, as he recorded 43 saves in his first appearance of the season.

With the win, Oswego State moved to 5-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference, while Brockport fell to 0-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in league play. The Lakers close out their current homestand with a game against Morrisville on Saturday, November 12 at 7 p.m.
