The packing has begun. Volunteers who have already sent more than 100 million Operation Christmas Child shoe box gifts filled with school supplies, hygiene items, and small toys for children in need in 130 countries since 1993 are packing again.
Volunteer sites in Watertown and Oswego are hosting parties to fill more than 1,000 boxes to go to boys and girls ages 2-14 in areas of disease, disaster, poverty and hunger.
People of all ages are welcome at the September 14 packing party at New Life Christian Church at 1222 Arsenal Street Plaza in Watertown, and on September 21 at Oswego Alliance Church Community Center at 370 Thompson Road, Oswego.
The packing begins at 9am. Shoe boxes and supplies are provided; donations of new items and funds for shipping the boxes overseas will be accepted. OCC NY North Central Area Coordinator Patty Jennings, who has personally helped deliver the shoe box gifts to children in Africa, South America and the Caribbean, will be at each packing party.
Volunteer organizers hope to pack more than 500 boxes at each party.
“These parties are a great way to introduce someone to Operation Christmas Child through the opportunity to pack boxes and see the types of items they can include in boxes of their own,” Jennings said.
Operation Christmas Child National Collection Week at more than 3,200 drop-off sites throughout the U.S. is November 18-25, 2013. Both packing sites serve as collection relay centers for those who pack boxes on their own.
The NY North Central Area of Operation Christmas Child includes Oswego, Oneida, Jefferson, Lewis and Herkimer counties.
