Friday’s Briefing: The Boys Are Back In Town
by Contributor | August 8, 2008 2:59 pm
The State Senate’s back at work today, trying to head off your anger over high taxes and the Governor’s demand for a tax cap.
What’s on their to-do list?
- Nominations to state posts[1] (including one that will make it harder for Democrats to take over the Senate this year);
- Lead abatement[2], to protect kids;
- Bullying[3], to protect kids some more;
- Home heating costs help[4] (if the minority Democrats get their way, which they usually don’t);
- Initiative and referendum[5] (but not recall).
Did’ja see the property tax cap on that list? Me either. Could still happen.
On The Subject Of Your Money:
- State Comptroller DiNapoli says when we’re in this bad of financial shape, no cut is off the table[6].
- Potential place to start: Highest paid state employee made $1.5 million[7] last year, after a pay cut.
- Gov. Paterson signs some bills, sends others[8] to bill purgatory. His vetoes aren’t making him any friends[9].
- A quote to give some urgency to the financial talks: “We cannot remain competitive by making products here in Upstate New York,”[10] said the head of a company moving jobs to China.
Elsewhere:
- Paterson’s gay equality order has its day in court[11]. Observers think Paterson’s order will stand[12].
- Senate’s top Republican dodges the question of what the Governor wants[13].
Gather Round The Campfire:
Go to the camp where, as one camper put it, “clothes suck”[14].
“Hello Muddah,
Hello Faddah.
I’ve got the runs at
Camp Grenada…”
Dep’t Of Only In New York:
- Pigeon-napping.[15] Who knew?
