Thursday’s Briefing: Tax Cap Picks Up Speed

by Contributor | July 24, 2008 11:13 am

Gov. Paterson’s signature issue, a cap on school property tax increases, is going to be the issue of the summer.  When last we checked in, Senate Republicans were on board with the Democratic Governor’s proposal.  Assembly Democrats, however, need to be convinced that schools won’t be hurt.  Now:

The state’s top fiscal official, Comptroller Tom Suozzi, is going to tour the state in support[1] of the cap;

And in a sure sign that the Democrats cannot afford to just say no, they’re coming up with a cap plan of their own[2].

The Gov, meantime, is sounding the alarm bell yet again[3] on state finances.

With His Mighty Pen:

Among the Gov’s bill signings and vetoes:

You don’t have to join the public employees’ union, but you do have to pay dues from now on[4].

Don’t give the meter maid a ration of crap anymore — it’ll just make things worse[5].

An allegedly risky way to get natural gas out of the ground wins approval[6].  Some extra analysis here[7].

A few of the vetoes here[8].

Department Of Energy (Or Lack Thereof):

Who would be opposed to one of those cute, energy-efficient Segways?  Lots of folks, it turns out[9].

Back to the future:  Wood stoves are suddenly popular again[10].

Not quite unrelated:  Food stamp use is way up[11].

Potpourri Of News:

The state’s “Death House” is empty and now isn’t even official[12].

Now, you can’t even smoke at the rehab center[13] you go to to give up smoking.

A museum to Gov. George Pataki[14] (supply your own punch line).

Meth arrests on the rise[15], and Sen. Chuck Schumer wants you to know he’s concerned.

Department Of Basic Facts:

This schools superintendent isn’t a state trooper, but he played one on his resume[16] (according to, ironically, the State Police).

Childbirth must be much more stressful in New Zealand.  It’s the only explanation I have for the huge number of absolutely messed up names new parents are giving their kids[17].

Call me anything you want, but put it (or a link to an interesting story) in the comments below.
