Thursday’s Briefing: This ‘n That

Our roundup of news from around the state is just that — a roundup.  Lots of little stuff, no big themes.

State Senate Republicans may be an endangered species, but if they’re going down, they’re going down swinging.  You know that Democrats have won back seats in the Republican-run Senate, and need to win only a couple away from the GOP in November to take control of the Senate.

Well, there’s nothing like a crisis to focus the mind, and the donors’ wallets[1].

But, as a little number crunching shows, money isn’t a guarantee[2].

Meantime, retiring State Senate leader Joe Bruno’s going to make more from his pension[3] than he did as a rank-and-file Senator. And, of course, he’s already got job opportunities[4].

Elsewhere:

• Home-schooled kids can now get special education services[5].
• It’s taken a verbal kick in the pants, but the DEC is finally moving to clean up tire dumps[6].
• Tom Golisano’s $5 million check didn’t bounce[7].
• New help for disabled folks to buy a home[8].
• Closing workers’ comp centers may save the state cash, but cost injured workers more[9].
