Tuesday’s Briefing: The Birthday Boy; Geezers Rock On
by Contributor | June 10, 2008 9:11 am
A hodgepodge of stuff today, with no particular theme:
Happy birthday, Eliot Spitzer! What’s he up to on his birthday, besides hoping to avoid prison? He’s setting up a fund at his father’s business to flip properties for high profit[1]. Meantime, another guilty plea’s expected today[2] in the Black Socks Sex Ring case. And, because a good reporter knows how to ride a hot story all the way to the ground, here’s a discussion of the tattoos[3] of one defendant. Yes, a happy birthday, indeed.
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announces today that three big internet service providers will block access to sites promoting child sex[4].
Speaking of Spitzer, a legislative year that began with a bang (steamroller; sex scandal; resignation) is likely to end with a whimper[5]. And some don’t know what to make of Gov. Paterson. Is he a quiet reformer or a protector[6] of the messed-up status quo?
Republicans in the Senate push for school pension reforms[7].
State Comptroller DiNapoli says campaign reform begins at home[8]. But for his employees, that’s a different story[9].
Parents plan to fight for the right to avoid having their kids immunized[10].
Green News:
- Gas pains for a late project[11].
- Brownfields plan’s late, too.[12]
Apropos of not-very-much:
- The Seneca Army Depot in the Finger Lakes community of Romulus used to house the nation’s nuclear weapons. Then, it closed. Now, Fort Drum’s needs may force it back open[13].
- Auburn’s daily newspaper switches to morning delivery[14].
- Experts come up with fastest computer ever[15]. Now, can someone force the ISPs to give us the bandwidth to make it worthwhile?
At the ticket counter:
- Geezer rockers Boston and Styx join the State Fair[16] lineup. Unless they break a hip between now and then.
- Geezer rockers John Fogerty, Bob Dylan and (Used To Be A) Kid Rock[17] announce for CMAC, outside Rochester.
- Buffalo Bills tickets — going fast[18].
And from the Department Of Cute Creatures:
- Son, what’s that wrapped around your leg[19]?
- And why this column’s obsession with animal poop matters. Poop can kill[20].
What did we miss? Throw it in the comments.
