Tuesday’s Briefing: The New New Math
by Contributor | July 15, 2008 12:13 pm
Since when does getting about one-third of the questions right on a test constitute a passing grade? When it’s the State of New York’s Regents Algebra exam, that’s when.
“Guess what, Mom! I got 30 out of 87 right[1] on the Regents Algebra test and I passed!”
But how many members of the Class of 2007 actually graduated? The state Education Department’s supposed to keep track of this stuff, and it doesn’t know[2].
Elsewhere:
- Y’know that school property tax cap that everyone says everyone wants? Turns out they’d prefer something else[3].
- From the same survey: It’s early, but Rudy Giuliani’s looking up at everyone else[4] if he plans to run for Gov in 2010.
- Golisano’s first check[5] heads to Western NY.
- The manufacturing economy: weak[6].
- NY extends jobless benefits[7].
- Those plans by Democrats to take over the State Senate this fall? They should check with their own version of Joe Lieberman.[8]
- Another guilty plea[9] in the Spitzer hooker case. This time, it’s the hooker booker.
Apropos Of Not Very Much:
- We’re guessing that doping day care kids to keep ’em quiet[10] violates some rule or other.
- New York City’s disbanding the Dance Police[11].
And In Sports:
- The glory, the majesty of old Yankee Stadium. It’ll be sad when it’s torn down. Except, of course, if you had to work there[12].
- Hey, hot dogs! Get your hot dogs! Ketchup, mustard, salmonella! [13] Hot dogs!
Did we miss anything? Drop it in the comments.
[It goes without saying that this daily roundup of news links is neither straight news nor commentary — just a skewed take on the day’s interesting stuff from around the state. In fact, it goes without saying so much, that we just had to say it again.]
