Wednesday’s Briefing: The Governor’s Signature

Our roundup of news from around the state begins at the desk of Governor David Paterson. You remember all those bills the Legislature passed right before blowing town for most of the rest of the year? Well, they need his signature, either to approve them or veto them.

Tuesday’s scorecard: 137 yes; 16 no[1].

• He approved a casino for the Catskills, while cracking down on wanton dog poopery[2].
• He’ll let you take your wine slushy anywhere[3] on the State Fair grounds from now on.
• He’ll veto a plan to improve Onondaga County’s 911 system by surcharge[4].
• And you can stop mowing your neighbor’s lawn[5] now.

Hundreds more bills await the Gov’s yea or nay.

You’ll be glad to know that none of Paterson’s valuable time was spent answering this question[6].

Elsewhere:

• Billionaire Tom Golisano and his moneybag are back. Lots of coverage[7] of his plan to spend $5 mil[8] of his own loot to influence state races[9] this year.
• The enhanced driver’s licenses that will get you back out of Canada without a passport will be here — just as soon as the summer vacation season is over[10].
• New figures show infections rates in hospitals across the state is higher[11] than the national average. Which hospitals? Sorry, you’ll have to wait a year for the deep details[12]. (Try not to get sick.)
• If you care about how water levels are regulated on Lake Ontario, don’t wait to speak up[13].
• Joe Bruno’s leaving the State Senate sooner rather than later[14], but won’t say when.
• Toxic mold. It can kill you. That’s why they call it “toxic”, and why they hold hearings[15].
