ANOTHER STUDY?

Oswego county Legislature just voted to conduct another study.

This one is to find out how much we should pay our rank-and-file county workers.

I guess being told what is needed for over a year wasn’t heard. The legislature needs an expert to tell them, not the rank and file.

Over the past year we have hired many Mgt. positions. The hiring process was County: “How much you need to take the position?” Ans. was “This much!” County’s Ans. was “OK you got it”.

I agree with this but the same must be done with the rank-and-file.

However, with the rank and file, it’s “we need a living wage” Ans. “Oh that has to go through negotiations” or “the union won’t let us”.

Costs of a single person household in Oswego County is over $30,000 a year.

The county wants to pay way less than that to start and still less than that with reclassifications.

A wage of $16.08 per hour will not give them a living wage unless they are living with their parents or retired and living on a fixed income.

Any pay less than $20.00 an hour will be less than the cost of living in Oswego County.

They wonder why they can’t recruit workers and why they can’t keep people.

Now they want an expert at a cost of not to go over $36,000 to tell them how much they need to pay the workers.

A living wage, one that will take them off the public assistance rolls.
